National Truck Driver Appreciation Week: How Domingues Transportation Celebrates Its Drivers

National Truck Driver Appreciation Week runs September 13 through 19 this year, a week set aside to recognize the more than three million professional drivers who keep the country's freight moving. For us, it's a good excuse to say something we try to show all year long: our drivers are the reason we're in business.

Why This Week Matters

Most people only think about trucking when something goes wrong: a shortage on a shelf, a delayed delivery, a shipment stuck somewhere. The rest of the time, drivers are doing the work that keeps that from happening, often overnight, away from home and without much recognition. A week dedicated to saying thank you doesn't make up for that, but it's a chance for the industry, and the public, to notice the people behind every load that arrives on time.

We use this week to slow down and make sure our drivers hear directly how much their work is valued, through personal thank-yous, small gestures of appreciation, and taking the time to listen to what's actually on their minds instead of just moving on to the next load. It's a smaller version of something we try to practice year-round: treating drivers like the professionals they are, not just another line on a schedule.

What Drivers Have Told Us Matters Most

When we ask drivers what appreciation actually looks like to them, the answer is rarely a gift or an event. It's dispatchers who answer the phone, pay that shows up accurately and on time, and a company that trusts them to make the right call on the road. Those are the things we try hardest to get right, this week and every other one.

The real test of a company's appreciation for its drivers isn't what happens during one designated week, it's what happens during the other fifty-one. Fair pay, honest communication and respect for a driver's time matter a lot more in March than they do in September. We treat this week as a reminder to keep doing that consistently, not as a substitute for it, because drivers can tell the difference between a company that means it and one that's just marking a calendar.
